Hailuoto is the largest island in the Bothnian Bay and well-known for it’s unique wilderness and national landscape. The island is characterized by pines, sandy dunes and traditonal red wooden buildings and small fishing villages. Hailuoto has only 1000 inhabitants (and about 350 mooses in the yearly countings). The island’s nature is very clean and peaceful with four clear seasons. Hailuoto is popular destination to the bird watchers. The ferry travels once per hour to the Hailuoto from the mainland. During the coldest winter season official ice-road on the sea is used. Hailuoto has a long history of artist both living and visiting the island.
From the Oulu airport there is no straight connection to the Hailuoto-ferry. From the airport travels bus regurarly to the city of Oulu. From Oulu the bus number 59 leaves to Hailuoto twice per day. Hailuoto bus leaves from the Oulu main bus station at 9:00 am and 4:10 pm on weekdays. The travel takes 1 ½ hour including 25 minutes ferry trip. The bus 59 only accepts cash.
Other option is to take taxi from the airport to the ferry and the residency staff will pick the guest up from the Hailuoto port.
